Public Trans & Traveling from Far Away

It’s quite easy to get to Shelter Island using public transportation if you’re coming from far away.

From the North

If you’re coming from New England, it’s easiest to get yourself to New London and take a ferry across to Long Island. Drive in or take public trans (there is an Amtrak station immediately adjacent) to the ferry terminal in New London, CT.

Make a reservation ASAP on the Cross Sound Ferry from New London to Orient www.longislandferry.com. You may leave your car in a garage in New London if you wish to travel on foot and save money on the ferry ticket, but you should know that it’s about 9 mi. from Orient Point to Greenport, which is where you need to catch ferry #2 to Shelter Island. There is a bus: s92 (see the route PDF here), that runs every hour so it is quite possible to take public transportation all the way from New London to Shelter Island.

Once in Greenport, follow “from Greenport” directions below.

From the South and West

Bus from Manhattan to Greenport (2h45m) $22 – www.hamptonjitney.com
Train from Manhattan to Greenport (3h) $20 – www.lirr.org
Car- Drive out the Long Island Expressway (I-495) to Greenport, NY via rt. 25 eastbound. When you get to Greenport, follow the directions below.

From Greenport, on the North Fork of Long Island

The North Ferry, (www.northferry.com) leaves every 15 minutes or so, and is about two blocks from where the local bus drops you off, and is right next to where the Hampton Jitney and Train let you off. It costs $9 one-way or $13 for a same-day roundtrip for your car, and passengers/walk-ons are $2. Cash only. No reservation needed.

Once on Shelter Island drive south on Rt 114 for 1.2 miles until you see a grocery store on your right and, at an intersection, a set of white gates on your left. Drive straight through the intersection onto Manwaring road. Follow signs to “Sylvester Manor Event.” Once on Manwaring you will take the next left, onto Manhanset Road. Parking for the festival will be about 1 mile north on Manhanset, on your left. There will be signs, and the ticket-takers will direct you to the stage area.

From the South Fork

Drive north on Route 114 from Sag Harbor. In North Haven you will come to the South Ferry, (www.southferry.com) which is a short crossing to Shelter Island (5 minutes.) Leave plenty of time (15 minutes minimum) for the ferry to arrive and load. The ferry costs $15 round-trip (same day) and passengers in the vehicle are free. Cash only.

Once you’ve arrived on Shelter Island, drive north on Route 114 (watch the signs! It’s curvy!) until you arrive at a stop sign with a big set of white gates in front of you. You will see signs for Sylvester Manor EVENT, with an arrow to the right. Turn right on Manwaring Road and follow the signs. You will take the next left, onto Manhanset road. Parking for the festival will be about 1 mile north on Manhanset, on your left. There will be signs, and the ticket-takers will direct you to the stage area.
